I stretch my toes to reach the soft watery ripple, that warms my toes,
and greets me to this land that very few are lucky enough to visit.
Far away from where most of my friends and family are on this February day,
I allow my toes to sink deep into the dark sand, and breathe in deep the air of Hawkes Bay.
As I sit on the tiny north island of New Zealand, I gaze out across the Pacific Ocean, and wonder what great force caused this small wave,
to lap over my toes, on this calm day.
The sky, although threatening and dark,
sends a long white cloud to remind me just where it is that I have wandered to.
I am grateful for the serenity of the water, the quiet bay, and the gift that has found me,
so far from home.
I can’t help but wonder how this wave came to be.
Did some underground quake rattle the sandy bottom of this deep blue sea sending ripples and currents far out across its watery medium?
Or did a gale force wind blow miles out at sea
and leave this tiny ripple as a reminder of its great power?
Or perhaps, it was something smaller?
As this tiny swell, laps peacefully over my toes,
I wonder if maybe a small child,
miles away, on the other side of the world,
tossed a pebble in the vast blueness, casting a ripple
that travelled great distances of both time and space,
and found me, years later,
across the big blue marble,
staring out into the great beyond,
thinking of a time when life was less hectic,
on a trip as a small child,
on a vacation where I dreamed of faraway lands.
As she tossed tiny pebbles into the blue, and wished the ripples would
carry her away, she wondered if someday they would meet again….
Peace, Chris
